So you’ve decided to put up a fence. Maybe you want privacy from an annoying neighbor or need a safe place to contain your kids and pets. Types of fencing and pointers for selecting your fence are discussed in this article.

First, you will need to find out if there are any zoning restrictions for fences in your area. If you live in an area that is subject to a homeowner’s association, you will also be required to follow their guidelines. You may find rules on how high the fence can be, what materials can be used, which side of the fence must face out, how close to the road your fence can be and where in relation to your house the fence can run. For example, you may only be allowed to run the fence off of the back corner of your house. If you are on a corner lot, be sure to find out if there are any special restrictions such as a lower maximum height for the fence. Note that if you fail to get proper zoning/HOA approvals or do not follow their guidelines, you could be forced to tear down your new fence.

Chain link fencing is the cheapest type. You can choose from different types of wire coatings including colored vinyl. The wire comes in different gauges with the lower gauges being the strongest. Chain link can eventually rust or get bent. Many subdivisions will not allow this type of fencing.

Wood fences are a popular choice. You can choose from several types of wood. Be sure that whatever wood you get has been treated to prevent rot, or your fence may not last long. Cedar has some natural protection against rot, but it is also much more expensive. You’ll be able to choose from several styles of pickets. If you have kids that throw objects such as hard balls, the dog ear pickets are less likely to get broken than pointier picket styles. For even more privacy, you can do two layers of fencing. If you want soundproofing, you can buy sound resistant material to put in between the two layers of fencing. Wood will need to be painted or treated with preservatives to maintain the appearance and longevity of the fence.

Vinyl fencing is an attractive, low maintenance choice. Styles resemble that of wood fencing. Unfortunately, vinyl is an expensive fencing type.

Aluminum fencing is also nice looking, but is also expensive. These fences resemble wrought iron and are especially popular for surrounding pools.

Fencing has may benefits like offering more privacy, marking boundary lines, helping to keep your possessions inside your year and the neighbor’s stuff out, giving kids and pets a safe place to play, and increasing the value of your property. Consider your needs and budget to find the perfect fence for you.
